Soup of Numbers — how to play, illustrated

The idea

What is Soup of Numbers?

Everyone gets the same grid of digits on their phone, a soup full of numbers. Each round the big screen shows one number hidden somewhere in that soup. Find it, tap its digits in a straight line, and if you're first, the points are yours. Longer numbers are worth more, so a 5-digit find is worth 250 points. Every number you find is painted in your color, so you can see who's winning the race just by looking at the soup.

Step by step

How to play Soup of Numbers

  1. The host picks the soup size, the biggest number length (2 to 5 digits), the rounds and the time per round.

  2. Everyone gets the same grid of digits on their phone.

  3. The big screen shows the number to find. It reads in a straight line, across, down or diagonally.

  4. Tap its digits in order. The first player to find it wins 50 points per digit.

  5. If nobody finds it in time, it's revealed and the next round starts. The highest total wins.

How many players?

1–12

players

Only the fastest player scores each round, so it's best with 2 to 8 people racing each other. Playing alone is a fun warm-up too.

Tips & tricks

How to win at Soup of Numbers

  • Look for the first digit first, then check the cells around it for the second one.

  • Numbers can run across, down or diagonally, so check every direction.

  • Rare digits are easier to spot. If the number has a 7 and the soup has few 7s, start there.

  • Any copy of the number counts, even one that appeared by chance.

  • Small soup (8×8) for quick games, 15×15 for real number hunters.
