The idea

What is Monster Mash?

Monster Mash is a spooky take on the classic folded-paper drawing game. Everyone gets the same Halloween theme, like a monster that lives in your fridge, and draws a head on their phone. Then the monsters move along: you draw a body for someone else's monster, seeing only the bottom of the neck, and then the legs, seeing only the bottom of the body. Nobody knows what they're drawing onto. When the last legs are done, the big screen reveals each monster from head to toe, gives it a ridiculous name and shows who drew which part. Everyone votes for the best one, and every artist of a winning monster scores.

Step by step

How to play Monster Mash

  1. The host picks how long each part takes. Everyone sees the same spooky theme on the big screen.

  2. Draw a head on your phone with your finger. When you're happy, tap Done.

  3. The monsters move along. Draw a body under someone else's head. You only see the bottom of their drawing, so connect to those lines.

  4. Pass it on once more and draw the legs. Then the big screen reveals every monster from head to toe, with a funny name and its three artists.

  5. Vote on your phone for the best monster, but not the one you started. Every vote gives a point to each artist of that monster.

How many players?

3–12

players

3 players can play, and every monster is drawn by all three of you. From 4 players the monsters get more mixed, and with 6 to 10 you get a whole gallery of creatures to vote on.

Tips & tricks

How to win at Monster Mash

  • Draw big and bold. Thin, tiny lines are hard to see on the TV.

  • Make the neck and the waist easy to find: draw the lines all the way to the bottom edge.

  • Use the theme. A monster that eats socks needs some socks somewhere!

  • Colors help a lot. A green body or purple legs make your part stand out in the reveal.

  • Don't overthink it. The funniest monsters come from parts that don't match at all.

Questions

Monster Mash FAQ

Do you see the other parts of the monster while drawing?

Only a thin strip at the bottom of the part above yours, so you know where to connect. The whole monster is a surprise until the reveal on the big screen.

How are points scored in Monster Mash?

Everyone votes for their favourite monster, except the one they started. Each vote gives a point to all three artists of that monster. With 3 players everyone draws on every monster, so it's more about the laughs than the score.

What if someone doesn't finish their drawing in time?

Everything drawn so far is kept. When the timer runs out, the monster moves on with whatever is on the page, and the reveal shows it as it is.

Can we keep the monsters?

Yes. At the end every phone can open the gallery with all the monsters of the game, perfect for a screenshot.

How many players can play Monster Mash?

3–12 players. 3 players can play, and every monster is drawn by all three of you. From 4 players the monsters get more mixed, and with 6 to 10 you get a whole gallery of creatures to vote on.
