Count Birds — how to play, illustrated

The idea

What is Count Birds?

A flock of black birds lands on the big screen, and you have a few seconds to count them. Sounds easy, right? Each round adds more birds. Then they start to fly around, then colored birds and other shapes show up to trick you, and in the last rounds it's total chaos. Enter your count on your phone: exact answers get 100 points, and being off by one still gets 50.

Step by step

How to play Count Birds

  1. The host picks how many rounds to play (5, 10 or 15) and how crowded the sky gets (Normal or Dense).

  2. Black birds appear on the big screen. Count only the black ones!

  3. Set your count on your phone with the + and − buttons before time runs out. You get 5 seconds in the first round and up to 15 in the last.

  4. An exact count gets 100 points and being off by one gets 50. Anything else gets nothing.

  5. Rounds get harder as the birds start moving and distractors appear. The highest total wins.

Everyone counts at the same time on their own phone, so it works for any group, from 1 player to a full classroom.

Tips & tricks

How to win at Count Birds

  • Count in groups of 2 or 3 instead of one by one. It's much faster.

  • Split the screen in your head (left half, then right half) and add them together.

  • Ignore the colored birds and shapes. They're there to trick you.

  • Close is still good. If time is running out, enter your best guess, since off by one still scores 50.

  • Kids love Normal, and Dense is a real challenge for adults.
